I should have deleted this comment because it's spam promoting some liberal agenda but I ultimately decided to leave it because this is a view that many parents will hear as they make their decision to homeschool.

The accusations that homeschooling doesn't work or that it isn't any better than formal (primarily public) schooling is absolutely false and there is no research that supports that view. The only truth in what was said is that many families ultimately decide to homeschool because of the failures of public school. However that does not mean in any way that homeschooling doesn't work and in fact it does work and it works well. I personally know of several families who homeschooled all their children and all of them are far more intelligent intellectually than the average public school children. All of them have or are working on their Bachelor Degrees at well known universities like Princeton, University of Washington, Berkeley, and George Washington. Oh...I can't forget to mention they all have a GPA of 3.9 or higher. Further it does not take 8 hours daily although that is beside the point. It simply takes dedication and hard work like anything else in life worth working for.

Introduction to the Charlotte Mason Approach - Sandi

This information gives me hope and direction for teaching my child that the world is the best teacher but she must be open to receive everything the world has to offer. Further, homeschooling has risen in popularlity simply because parents have no real alternative to schools (whether public or private) but to keep their children at home.

Unfortunately, homeshooled children basically get the same teaching and learning approach in their own homes that they would be getting in formal schools and unless the homeschool "teacher" (usually a parent) is highly skilled and able to dedicate upwards of 8 hours a day to this task, the children as often as not do not emerge any better off.

What is needed is a better way to enable children to learn and provide for them to do so outside of their homes and without needing for one or more parents to make a life commitment to it. Take a look at the definitive treatment of this problem developed by Trigon-International in its recently released commission report, "Education in America -- What's to Be Done?"

De-schooling to start home education - Bran

I agree with this post.
